Rainbow Unicorn Birthday Cake!

Intro

For this absolutely gorgeous Rainbow Unicorn Cake, I had a friend order it from me for their daughter's seventh birthday! And I just knew that no 7-year old could resist this magical glamorous Unicorn cake (and not to mention there was a colorful rainbow on the front). This Rainbow Unicorn cake was such a fun challenge to make, it was full of surprises, and was such a magical baking experience! I highly recommend that you try it out!

Prepping

Before I did any baking in the kitchen I pre-piped all the rainbow-swirly dollops for the unicorns mane. I did this by simply making my rainbow buttercream, then piping the buttercream into whatever shape I wanted the dollops to be directly on some parchment paper. The parchment paper was on a sheet pan so that there could be stability while I transported my perfect dollops to the freezer to be chilled. After being chilled, I placed the dollops on my frosted (and chilled) readied cake. Also I stuck the dollops onto the cake by using a bit more buttercream so that they wouldn't fall off.

The last thing I did before baking was roll out the fondant so that I could make my rainbow. Also I didn't chill the fondant since it could lead to cracking.

Design and Decor

For the design of this cake I decided to do the bottom tier with two 9-inch rounds, and for the second tier I used two 6-inch rounds. Sticking four dowels on the edge of the 9-inch cakes, and one dowel through all four layers really supported the cake and the stability so it wouldn't collapse within itself.

Decorating this cake was such a fun experience, but what I really enjoyed, was working on the ombre from teal to purple to yellow. Despite the time it took trying to make each color look blended enough, I enjoyed getting out of my comfort zone. The Unicorn Cake itself was plain white all the way around, except for the mane, which was luckily simple enough. I also found these delicious looking marshmallow cupcakes, that I knew the cake could just not be without. And finally for the ears, horn, and eyes, I got it from a kit from -you guessed it!-my local Walmart.

As for the flavoring of this cake, the cakes were vanilla funfeti flavored, and I also had to bake an additional 12 cupcakes, which were strawberry flavored. The buttercream I used was a cream cheese buttercream, since I find it easiest to work with. And finally for the filling, I used whip-cream, for both the cake and cupcake filling. I highly recommend not using recommend using whip-cream for the cake filling though, because there was a bit of a misunderstanding for the order and it almost led to the cakes sliding off of each other completely.

The Final Product

After 4 days of hard baking in the kitchen, all 12 cupcakes and all 4 cake layers were finally ready. I was so satisfied with the way the outcome came out, and I hope that I get another cake order in the future! Thanks for reading my blog!
